Visit Casa Vigil

Casa Vigil is the personal project of Alejandro Vigil, for years the head winemaker at Catena Zapata. His boutique winery in El Carrizal is a tribute to literature, Argentine legends and his family's Italian cooking. Cellars carved into the hillsides, a restaurant decorated like a literary salon, wines such as El Enemigo Malbec, Bonarda and the iconic Gran Enemigo Cabernet Franc. An experience that combines winemaking, gastronomy and storytelling like few others in the world.

  1. 01

    History & legacy

    The house, its origin.

Alejandro Vigil, for years head winemaker at Catena Zapata, opened Casa Vigil in 2013 in El Carrizal, Maipú. More than a conventional winery, Casa Vigil is an authored project: literature, mythology, family Italian cooking and wines loaded with narrative. Every label tells a story. His El Enemigo range, launched with Adrianna Catena, took Argentine Cabernet Franc into the ranking of the world's best wines. The winery is one of the busiest places in Mendoza: small, theatrical and with a waiting list of months.

  2. 02

    Terroir & vineyards

    The place makes the wine.

El Carrizal, in south-eastern Maipú, is a traditional area with the stony alluvial soils typical of Mendoza. Vigil works old vineyards with vines more than 80 years old, especially Malbec and Bonarda. He also vinifies fruit from Gualtallary, Paraje Altamira and Tupungato, showing contrasts of altitude and soil. His philosophy: respect the place, don't dress up the wine, let it tell you where it comes from.

  3. 03

    Architecture & visit

    The space where it happens.

Casa Vigil has cellars carved into the hillsides, decorated like literary salons. Sculptures, frescoes, antique books: every space is set design. The restaurant, led by María Laura Vigil (Alejandro's wife and a chef), serves Italian-Argentine cooking with ingredients from the land. Lunches are long and sociable, with guided pairings. The experience is cultural before it is technical.

  4. 04

    Recognition

    Awards & reviews.

Gran Enemigo Cabernet Franc Single Vineyard was named among the world's Top 10 wines by James Suckling. El Enemigo Bonarda received 100 points from Tim Atkin MW in 2020. Alejandro Vigil has been named Winemaker of the Year by international publications and sits on Decanter's Wine of the Year jury.

Frequently asked

Before you go.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, several weeks or months ahead, especially in high season (October to April). Casa Vigil has very limited capacity and is one of the most sought-after visits in Mendoza. Vito Wine Tours handles the booking.

Is lunch included in the visit?

The classic Casa Vigil experience includes the tour, the tasting and a multi-course paired lunch. It's roughly a 4-hour stay at the winery.

Does Alejandro Vigil host personally?

Sometimes. He tends to appear when he's at the winery, especially at special lunches. It can't be guaranteed, but it happens often.

Is it suitable for people without much wine knowledge?

Absolutely. Casa Vigil's strength is precisely the narrative: anyone enjoys the storytelling, the food and the atmosphere without needing to be a sommelier.

Do you combine Casa Vigil with another winery on the same day?

Yes. We usually pair it with a century-old Maipú winery (Trapiche, López, Norton) in the morning, then Casa Vigil with lunch afterwards.
