The oasis
There was nothing here until the water arrived.
Mendoza sits in a desert. Everything green exists because the Huarpe people first, and later the city, channelled the Andean snowmelt into irrigation ditches that still run alongside every pavement.
The route
Four blocks of the city.
The new city was laid out on a grid, with a square every few blocks. The route follows that logic: four stops, half a day.
-
01Founding Quarter
1561 · 1861Where Mendoza was born and where it lies buried. Under a glass floor you can see the foundations of the old city, exactly as the 1861 earthquake left them.
-
02Plaza Independencia
Four satellite squaresThe heart of the new city, with the Chile, España, Italia and San Martín squares one diagonal block away. That grid was designed so people would have somewhere to run if the ground shook again.
-
03Cerro de la Gloria
The lookoutCrowned by the Monument to the Army of the Andes. From up here you grasp the oasis in a single glance: the green stain in the middle of the desert.
-
04San Martín Park
400 hectaresTrees watered by irrigation ditches, lakes, a rose garden and the iron gates brought from Scotland. The largest proof of what water made possible.

FAQ
Is there much walking?
Between stops we travel by vehicle, and at each one there's a short walk at your own pace. The squares and the founding quarter are flat; Cerro de la Gloria can be reached by car.
Can it be combined with wineries?
Yes, it's the most requested option: the city in the morning and wineries in the afternoon, or one on each day. We'll put it together when you write to us.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. The route is short, outdoors, and being private it adapts to the group's pace.
Is the museum included?
The visit to the Founding Quarter Museum is optional and paid separately. If you'd like to go in, we'll arrange it in advance.
What if it rains?
It rarely rains in Mendoza, but if it does we reorder the route or move it to another day at no cost.
